Consider This

3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
6 And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water."
9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so.
11 Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so.
14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so.
20 And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky."
24 And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so.

Sound familiar? This is Creation, where God created the universe and all within it. Through His infinite power, He spoke the world and it was so.

But consider this:

27 So God created man in his own image,
       in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

God did not speak us into existence. He stooped down from the heavens and personally molded us, each of us in a unique way. And then He breathed into us His breath of life. Never think you are nothing to God, for you are His creation. He could have just whispered us into the world, but He chose to create us with His hands.

Iron

"As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another."
- Proverbs 27:17

So how does iron relate to being an earthen vessel? As you may know, you hold God's gift for us, the joy of Jesus Christ. As you "sharpen" one another, let the treasure inside of you rub off onto another. Spread the love of God around the world... let the Gospel be contagious!

Who's God?

"Is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith."

-Romans 3:29-30

God is colorblind. He does not see each individual for facial features, ethnicity, height, weight, none of these things. He looks at the heart. God is a God of justice, who will in the end judge us all according to our faith. Like earthen vessels, the surface may seem worthless, but it's the treasure inside of us, the glory of God in the face of Christ, that tells who we are.

He not my God, nor is He your God.
He is OUR GOD.

Mantis

Inspired by 2 Corinthians 5.17, this illustration symbolizes a shedding mantis, leaving the old behind and emerging as a new creation.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (KJV)

Psalm 25

To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul; in you I trust, O my God. Do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. No one whose hope is in you will ever be put to shame, but they will be put to shame who are treacherous without excuse. Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

Earthen Vessel?

An earthen vessel was a common clay cookware item ßfound in 1st–century kitchens. Clay pots were considered of very little value. They broke easily and were inexpensive to replace. While metal and glassware were of great value, a clay pot was not something you would want to present to your guests.
Paul compares himself to an earthen vessel in 2 Corinthians 4:7. His point was that he held very little value compared to the power of God working through him. What is important is the ministry he has been given and the message he bears to the world. Paul doesn’t want to be put on display, as if he or any other servant of God were what is important. Today too the Spirit within us and the Gospel we share deserve priority.

Why a brown paper bag?
The brown paper bag is our modern day translation of an earthen vessel. Cheap, replaceable, and just not that special.
